#26 - What’s the first step in setting up your concussion care medical practice?

So, you’re interested in setting up a concussion clinic but you’re not sure how to go about it. Let’s talk about where you should start to create your own concussion care medical practice.

Concussions are a common injury that requires complex treatment. Because so many disciplines are involved in treating concussions (this includes athletic trainers, physicians, physical therapists, nurses, occupational therapists, and others.), the very first step is to determine who will be the concussion care team leader.

It is important to designate one person who can conduct initial assessments, coordinate referrals, and make return to activity decisions. This point person should be licensed to make return to play / return to activity decisions in the area in which you practice and should have good knowledge of a concussion.

Ideally, this person would be a Credentialed ImPACT Consultant – a qualified healthcare provider who has been specially trained in the management of a concussion. This person will complete an application and go through a 10-hour online training and exam process. Check out ConcussionCareTraining.com to learn more.
